I was first introduced to Squirrel’s Nut Butter over 3 years ago when I was volunteering at the packet pickup for the Black Canyon 100k race run by Aravaipa Running. Chris Thornley, the founder of Squirrel’s Nut Butter (SNB), had set up a booth next to the table where I was working. During a break, he introduced me to SNB, his new anti-chafe product that many trail runners were already chattering about.
SNB was created by Chris’s wife, Stacy, as a healing salve for her daughter’s eczema. As a nurse, Stacy was familiar with various healing products and had been experimenting in their kitchen to find something that would offer some relief. After multiple tests, they finally found the right combination that worked- a mixture of coconut oil, cocoa butter, beeswax, and vitamin E oil. Shortly after, Chris gave a tub of the new cream to a buddy of his, Squirrel. Squirrel was a bicyclist and used the product to prevent chafing during his long rides. He found that it worked remarkably well, and Squirrel’s Nut Butter was created.
And so, after Chris introduced me to SNB at the Black Canyon 100k expo, and gave me a sample to try, I set out to test it out. That night, a friend and I headed out onto the Black Canyon course for an out and back run on the last section of the trail. I used the SNB on my usual trouble spots- the sports bra line, the inner arms where my pack would rub, and my nether regions. And to my surprise, I had absolutely no issues. And then a few days later, on a long run up Mesquite Canyon, I developed an angry spot on my arm where my pack was rubbing me raw and I had forgotten to put lube. I quickly rubbed some SNB on the spot hoping it would prevent further damage. But, to my shock, by the time I reached the bottom of the trail, the raw area wasn’t just protected from getting worse; it was completely gone! The SNB had healed my raw spot while I was running.
I shared my wonderful discovery on Facebook, and a short while later, received a message from Chris inviting me to be one of their first Ambassadors. Of course, I jumped at the chance. And, I have been representing SNB ever since.
Since then, SNB has developed a number of new products and each of them is awesome in their own right. As a team, they pretty much cover the gambit of what an athlete would need to prevent chafing, protect and nourish your feet, and aid in recovery after tough workouts.
I’ve personally used the original SNB lube in stick and tub form since I first discovered it. But now, there are three new SNB products that I have fallen in love with as well. For vegans or anyone wanting to avoid beeswax products, there is a new SNB made with calendula wax. And this lube is just as smooth and creamy as the original. I’ve really found no performance difference between the two; they both work great.
In addition to these two anti-chafe products, there is a new pain relief product called Born to Rub. To their vegan blend, they added chiltepin peppers, cayenne peppers, and arnica flowers. The result is a blend that warms up muscles before exercise and helps relieve pain after. The chiltepin peppers are hand picked from the bottom of the Copper Canyons of Mexico in collaboration with Mas Korima. This stuff works great for me after a long run if I have some troubling spots, or just for my everyday aches and pains. You do have to watch your clothes though as this stuff can stain a bit…
And lastly, my favorite new product of the bunch is Happie Toes. Happie Toes was designed to restore skin between your workout efforts. Made with kokum butter, tea tree oil, and peppermint oil, this stuff smells great. I slather it on my feet every night before bed and it has done wonders at keeping my feet healthy and blister free.
What started out as just one product created in Chris and Stacy’s kitchen, has now grown to 4 products that are being shipped all over the world. I’m obviously a huge fan, and that’s why I have chosen to represent them since my very first experience with this awesome product. But, don’t just take my word for it- check it out for yourself. I guarantee you will never try anything else.
